CREATUREDOODLES: Creator Showcase '21

Hey, it's JP A.K.A @CreatureDoodles!

WATCH OUT! "Creature" isn't in his username for nothing. We have the mastermind behind all of Trover's chaotic holiday adventures in the house! Taking all of our favorite characters and turning them into gorey, monstrous nightmares is JP, Mr. CreatureDoodles himself.

Take a gander at his portfolio, eh? If your most-loved characters from 90's and 00's TV shows boast rotting flesh, or a knife to the eye, or a weird mutant attached to their limbs...don't question it. Curious? Be sure to give a look at his full works!

WARNING: Childhood potentially ruined.

You’re known as @creaturedoodles on social media, what’s the best part about making our favorite characters into creepy creatures?

Really my favorite part is connecting with other folks who seem to have the same warped love for these cartoons I parody or disfigure. There are some really amazing artists out there who do serious justice to 90s toons.

How did you first get into this particular art style?

I think like most people who have a love for any style of work I've just been drawing them since I was quite young and over the years it became an amalgamation of things I love such as horror, cartoons, and puns.

From melting off flesh to creating bug-human hybrids, where do your awesomely weird ideas come from?

They come from a place in my mind where I'm sure even the best physiologist wouldn't be keen to delve in haha. Just kidding! Really I can only take credit as a sort of intermediary of the ideas of some great cartoon/horror creators of the 80s/90s. They're my Doctor Frankenstein.

Do you have any favorite horror movies/ stories?

Oh that is a long ol' list. I'm a huge George A Romero fan. Night, Dawn and Day are my go-to films when I need to unwind. The Shining, Halloween, and Creepshow ( As shown by a lot of my work ) are close to my heart also and to this day have the same effect on me and inspire me.

If you had to choose, what’s the strangest piece you’ve ever created?

I don't think I can pinpoint the strangest one because I see them all as pretty tame but when I knew I was making my friends laugh, I knew I was making something others could enjoy. I think it may have been a doodle I drew based on an animation a good friend of mine (Dazzler Waters) put to me about 10 years ago about a cow recreating the Buffalo Bill scene from The Silence Of The Lambs. But I took that and brought David Feiss' Cow & Chicken into the mix.

What’s one piece of yours everyone has to see?

I'm not sure. I think everyone can find one of the many cartoons I've drawn and find something that clicks with them. I couldn't pick one!

Many of your doodles play into our favorite TV shows like Rugrats, The Simpsons, and Ed, Edd, & Eddy–do you have any cool memories tied back to those shows?

Oh absolutely! I think we all have amazing memories of cartoons in the 90s and really how dark and real they were willing to go when entertaining kids. I've always loved the cartoons I grew up with and appreciate the makers were able to come up with storylines that may have gone over kids' heads or frightened them, but they at least gave us a chance to understand them.

You can only pick one of the three shows mentioned above to watch for the rest of your life. Which one are you picking?

Hahaha The Simpsons, an absolute no-brainer. I'm very much a Simpsons fanboy and just think their earlier seasons are pure art when it comes to comedy. "D'oh" is the Mona Lisa of catchphrases.

You created three awesome pieces for Squanch this season, where did each of the ideas come from?

I sat down and played through Trover Saves the Universe and sort of tried to imagine a Christmas in that universe….then I got as dark and silly as I could.

We were able to see a murderous Frosty, a maniacal reindeer, and a mutant Santa in your artwork this week! Who do you think would win in a fight?

I'm not sure and I've really been trying to think of a logical answer. Like the snowman is immortal, right? If you destroy him he falls to the snow and regenerates but Santa is also immortal but is he free from harm? According to The Santa Clause 1994, he can fall off a roof and die so on that logic he has immortality but not regenerative powers so I think the snowman would win.

If you were also trapped by a reindeer in a web of Christmas lights just like Trover in the artwork you created, how would you escape?

Escape? I think if I was up against two regular 200+kg hairy beasts with 51-inch antlers on their head I'd be panicking but would put up a fight. BUT when they have been given the power of levitation and immortality from a big red demigod-like overlord I reckon I'd make peace with my maker and wait for my inevitable death. Those Reindeer have been around far too long to be outsmarted by some ginger chap from Ireland.
