Trover News Talks to The Incredible David Firth!

By: Squanch Staff
May 24, 2021

We had the honor of sitting down with David Firth to discuss the man behind his work... himself.

So please take a moment your time to get to know the animator, director, writer, musician, actor, voice actor, video artist and broadcaster responsible for creating some super awesome stuff.

Anything from animated videos such as Salad Fingers and Pre-Chewed Food (of course), to music  under the name Locust Toybox. This man does it all, only minus some.

But regardless of what he has (or perhaps hasn't) done, check out  Pre-Chewed Food on Squanch's YouTube Channel or at the bottom of this blog.

Otherwise, read on to learn more about the incredible Mr. David Firth!

TROVER NEWS: What got you started in animation?

DAVID: I inherited the natural urge to create from my parents. From the very start it was just making things one after another. After I discovered that multiple images on separate pages of a book could make a cartoon there was no turning back. My progression then was just a series of small upgrades: 2 pages became 50. Then I got a camera, spent 2 years making animations with that, got a PC, found animation software, started recording my voice, getting better software, learning new techniques. Everything is a progression of what I knew before.

TROVER NEWS: How would you say your work has evolved over the years?

DAVID: My work stopped being a remix of my influences around the time I started getting noticed. I had found my style and from there gradually stopped taking inspiration from other works and started aiming to create what didn’t already exist.

TROVER NEWS: What are your favorite tools and/or software to use when creating your work?

DAVID: I use what I know. It doesn’t mean they’re my favourites, it’s just that learning software is a pain and I don’t feel comfortable creating until I know my tools so my favourite software could be something I haven’t even found yet. I spend enough time getting annoyed at the company whose software I use so I don’t want to endorse them in any way. But to say they have a bit of a monopoly over the creative space could be a hint.

TROVER NEWS: What have you been up to lately?

DAVID: I am currently messing with lots of old TV footage to make a world of my own. I don’t really know if it’ll work. I don’t really know what I’m doing so hopefully that’ll be a recipe for success.

TROVER NEWS: How did Pre-Chewed Food come to be?

DAVID: I saw a bag of pre-chopped mushrooms in a supermarket and wrote the note in my book “what next, pre-chewed food?”. Also the fact that laziness is a billion dollar market these days. So many businesses thrive on our increased laziness.

TROVER NEWS: Can you share a good pre-chewed food recipe?

DAVID: When I think about it, hotdogs are worse than pre-chewed meat. They’re pre-chewed bits of an animal that couldn’t even be considered meat. So hotdogs or any other mashed up processed meat.

TROVER NEWS: Do you think there is a situation where you would ever pull out your own tooth?

DAVID: No

TROVER NEWS: Do you think you would be more terrified of a small being jumping out of an american wrestler’s crotch at you, or an american wrestler jumping out at you?

DAVID: Well the small being would be tiny. I could squash it.

TROVER NEWS: Where would you like to send people who are interested in viewing more of your work?

DAVID: My website https://www.fat-pie.com The hyphen is very important in this web address.

TROVER NEWS: Would you happen to have anything else you’d like to share?

DAVID: I make lots of music under the name Locust Toybox - it’s out there on Spotify and such. I use it in all my work, including Pre-Chewed Food. There is nothing like making music. Everyone should try it. It’s easier than people think. And it releases something very important from inside you that is possible in no other artform.
